On Saturday, the late Whitney Houston will be laid to rest in her home state of New Jersey. New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, made the announcement yesterday and stated that Whitney deserves this recognition because:

her accomplishments in her life were a source of great pride for many people in this state.

Flags are normally flown at half-staff to honor fallen presidents, or other government officials, even peace officers. It's also done to honor our nations veterans on days like Veterans Day. Other days that flags are ordered to half-staff include Memorial Day, Patriot Day, and Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day to name a few. Only the President and state Governors can order flags to half-staff.

This being said, Flag Code does mention honoring prominent citizens, or any citizen for that matter, as long as the President or state Governor decides the person deserves the honor.

There has been a lot of negativity going around Facebook and Twitter about the media's coverage of Whitney Houston's death compared to the lack of coverage for our fallen military men and women. I have to agree.  What kind of message are we sending to our children - or other countries even. I think our flags should be flown at half-staff until all our military men and women are out of harms way. Not a day should go by that we shouldn't pause and remember their sacrifice.

Do you agree with New Jersey's decision to honor Whitney Houston this way?
